THE RED-COLORED THREADS
blank

This article is a recapitulation of the four previous articles on the same topic in which I asked you to identify the red-colored thread that runs through the chain of Bodhi beads of the Buddha, his holy bhikkhu disciples, Bodhisattvas, and spiritual practitioners like ourselves. These four situations are archetypes of four different spiritual paths that each possesses specific characteristics due to differing levels of spiritual capacity and objectives.

1. Awakening: is the first requisite that leads to the decision to renounce the conventional worldly life. The Buddha’s first awakening was powerful and sword-like sharp, severing all ties of the five desires of wealth, beauty, fame, food and rest. The Buddha’s awakening bears the hallmark of the wisdom of a person of high level of spiritual capacity. No one has since shown a similar degree of renunciation when at the top of wealth, beauty, fame, food and rest, and considering that the spiritual path ahead is so uncertain. For the bhikkhu disciples of the Buddha, their awakening occurred when they decided to renounce the worldly life and follow the dharma and discipline of the Buddha after they had met and heard from the Buddha. They had accumulated great merits that resulted in favorable causal conditions. Conditions for their practice were much more favorable than those of the Buddha as they had the benefit of a teacher who led them on the path, unlike the Buddha who had to find his own way at the cost of great hardship. For this reason, the awakening of the Buddha’s bhikkhu disciples didn’t need to be as incisive as a sharp sword. The way of the Bodhisattva was formulated much later by Developmental Buddhism which did not require practitioners to renounce the worldly life and considered that lay people who had a family life could still follow the spiritual path. However, family ties still represent a substantial obstacle on the path. For this reason, the ideal models for Bodhisattvas are represented in the Vimalakīrti Sutra by the following two Bodhisattvas:

-         Venerable Nāgārjuna who was a monk renowned for his extraordinary benevolence and wisdom.

-         Venerable Vimalakīrti who was a lay person but led a pure life free from the bounds of family life, and was also renowned for his extraordinary benevolence and wisdom.

Our awakening probably ranks at the lowest level as we still live within our family, with our parents, grand-parents and relatives. Family life requires us to provide financially and cares for the emotional needs of people in our family circle. We need to conduct ourselves in a way that fosters harmony and happiness within the group.

Our first step on the spiritual path did not set the favorable conditions and therefore, we need to allow more time and patience if we wish to achieve a good result.

2. Austerity: on his spiritual journey, the Buddha initially experienced two unsuccessful stages. He spent six years practicing the methods that were prevalent at the time and took each of them to their highest degree. He went through the four stages of formless meditation and experimented with extreme self-mortification practices such as deprivation of food and drink, living in isolation deep in the forest and holding the breath until passing out etc. It was when his health had reached the stage of exhaustion that he had another awakening and saw the first aspect of the Middle Way: that excessive indulgence and excessive austerity are both wrong. However, through the years practicing austerity, the Buddha had achieved a much deeper control over his desires – wealth, beauty, fame, food, and rest.

The Buddha later taught his bhikkhu disciples Discipline in order to maintain purity, and encouraged seclusion from society through seeking alms, living in the forests or up the mountains, and avoiding noisy places especially for young monks who just started on the path. Only when they have cleansed themselves of all mental defilements and attained arahat-hood that he encouraged them to go back into the world and teach as the opportunities arise. In regards to Bodhisattvas, the norm is to maintain a solemn and dignified conduct rather than severe austerity.

As for us laypeople, we have vowed to uphold the five precepts when we took refuge in the Three Jewels. The five precepts are very important if we wish to purify our mind and avoid generating bad karma. Steadfastly upholding the five precepts will also elevate our standard of conduct and greatly help later in our practice of Samādhi and Wisdom.

3. Resolve: This is an important factor, relevant to all four levels of spiritual capacity (Buddha, Bhikkhu, Bodhisattvas, ourselves), who all need the strong resolve to reach the final destination without being tempted to turn back. However, a finer examination will reveal some differences. In the case of the Buddha, he had a strong resolve to find a way to free himself and all of humanity from ageing, illness and death. The result was his decision to leave his family - meaning the love of and towards his parents, wife and young child – , wealth and high status to go on a spiritual quest of unknown destination and unknown methods of getting there. As for the Buddha’s bhikkhu disciples, they had more favorable causal conditions as they had a teacher, a practice method, and faith in the wisdom of the teacher. Therefore, their resolve was to follow the path until the end. The red-colored thread that runs through their Bodhi beads is the resolve to follow the Buddha. In the case of Bodhisattvas, they also need an unflinching resolve as the way of the Bodhisattva is an unending journey of reincarnation life after life to fulfill the vow to teach humanity. In our case, we also have some resolve, however it is likely that we still give priority to our family, and therefore our resolve is not absolute.

4. Wisdom: The Buddha attained enlightenment without the guidance of a teacher. Let us reflect on his spiritual journey. Why was he so deeply troubled by the sight of an old, sick and dead person? Why just the sight of an ascetic monk could give him the answer to his question of “how to escape the sea of suffering”? Why did he see that the four stages of formless meditation would not lead to the outcome he desired and and that he need to move on in search of a correct practice method? Why did he decide to end the self-mortification practice? How did he know how to progress from the first stage of meditation to the second, from the second stage to the third, and then from the third stage to the fourth? The answer is: he had extraordinary wisdom that gave him a very clear understanding. We can see that the Buddha did not have a teacher to guide him through the stages of the spiritual path. Therefore, the red-colored thread of the Buddha is an innate wisdom that he did not learn from anyone else. When the Buddha taught his disciples, he knew that they did not have a similar level of wisdom and stressed the need to study broadly. The Buddha’s bhikkhu disciples were encouraged to listen frequently to the dharma as expounded by the Buddha and his senior disciples, and then put the teaching into practice. As for Bodhisattvas, they followed the practice of Stillness (samādhi) and Wisdom focused on the topic of Suchness, as shown in the teaching on the Ten Stages of the Bodhisattva. In our case, we need to listen to the dharma in order to develop our insights, then gradually go through the four practices of Contemplation, Tranquility, Stillness and Wisdom. For us, practicing a correct method based on the teaching of the Buddha is very important. We also need a teacher who can teach us the right dharma, as our spiritual capacity is only at a moderate level.

5. Seclusion: The Buddha often praised the virtue of seclusion. This includes: seclusion from family, relatives and friends; seclusion from busy places; and seeking isolated places to dwell day and night. After they had eaten the midday meal, bhikkhus, bhikkhunis and even the Buddha would find a quiet secluded place, such as under a tree in the forest, to rest. For their part, Bodhisattvas live in the world but are not corrupted by the world. As for us lay practitioners, we still live within the bounds of family life and have a sense of duty towards our family. Therefore, we can only enjoy relative freedom of concern.

6. Samādhi-Stillness: The Buddha attained enlightenment after going through four stages of meditation, also called the four stages of Stillness (samādhi). He had a high level of spiritual capacity, mastered the precepts of pure living, accumulated merits and had sufficient practice. When he taught his disciples, the Buddha developed several methods that are suited to each level of spiritual capacity. The Buddha at times taught Discipline, or Contemplation (such as in “The Characteristic of Non-Self” sutta, Samyutta Nikāya SN 22.59, or “The Longer Discourse on the Ending of Craving” sutta, Majjhima Nikāya MN 38), or Stillness (such as in the “Mindfulness of breathing” sutta, Majjhima Nikāya MN 118), or Wisdom (As-Is teaching), or Stillness combined with Wisdom (such as in the “Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness” Majjhima Nikāya MN 10), or Discipline Stillness and Wisdom combined (such as in the Noble Eightfold Path teaching, “The Great Forty” sutta, Majjhima Nikāya MN 117) etc. In the case of Bodhisattvas, they often practice while teaching. According to the “Ten Stages of the Bodhisattva” teaching, in the first stage the Bodhisattva already recognized the meaning of Suchness. Therefore, the red-colored thread through the Bodhi beads of the Bodhisattva is cognitive awareness, which starts as verbal cognitive awareness in the first stage and becomes non-verbal in the last three stages when it becomes non-verbal cognitive awareness of Suchness and Emptiness.

Our group of lay practitioners consists of practitioners of varying levels of spiritual capacity, therefore we should practice the method that accords with our own capability. The red-colored thread that runs through our Bodhi beads is awareness. When we listen to the dharma and study the sutras, we develop a verbal awareness that has started to become pure and free from unwholesome aspects. When our mind starts to experience peacefulness, we begin to experience non-verbal awareness. After we repeatedly practice the As-It-Is topic, we gradually move into Suchness Awareness, which is non-verbal Self-Awareness or non-verbal Cognitive Self-Awareness, or Cognitive Self-Awareness of Emptiness, the final step.

7. Buddhahood: As a result of his high level of spiritual capacity, sharp sword-like wisdom, termination of mental defilements, and silencing of inner talk, inner dialogue, feelings and sensations, and perception, the Buddha attained the highest level of enlightenment that could be attained by Buddhas of the past, present and future. He became an Arahant of correct perfect universal enlightenment. The Buddha’s bhikkhu disciples who eliminated all mental defilements also became Arahant and entered nibbāna (nirvana), but did not attained the correct perfect universal enlightenment. Only Buddhas entered the Parinibbāna (nirvana without remainder). As for Bodhisattvas, they do not dwell in nibbāna but reincarnate over and over to teach humanity. For ourselves, we will be able to attain relative results such as a healthy body, peaceful mind, gradually developing wisdom, some intuition, and gradually emerging compassion, loving-kindness, sympathetic joy and equanimity.

In this text, I have examined in general and un-exhaustive terms the spiritual path applicable to four levels of spiritual capacity. The conditions that thread through stages of the path present several points of similarity such as awakening, resolve, effort, wisdom, practice etc. For this reason, when I asked you to identify the red-colored thread that runs through the Bodhi beads applicable to each level of spiritual capacity, many of you have come up with correct answers. In this text, I would just like to point out why there are different red-colored threads, although their function is essentially the same. Conditions are similar in all circumstances, however their importance may vary according to the level of spiritual capacity. I would like to thank you for your responses.
